What Is Sofa Seat Depth and Why Does It Matter?

Sofa seat depth is the distance from the front edge of the seat cushion to the backrest. For most adults a comfortable standard sofa seat depth sits between 55 and 62cm (22 to 24 inches). A shallower seat keeps you upright and makes standing easier. A deeper seat suits lounging but can leave your lower back unsupported. Our Chesterfields have a 58.4cm (23 inch) seat, in the middle of the standard range.

What is sofa seat depth?

Seat depth is measured from the front edge of the seat cushion straight back to the point where your back meets the sofa. That point might be a back cushion or the inside of a fixed back. It tells you how much of your thigh the seat supports. To measure it, lay a tape flat along the seat with the cushion unpressed.

A seat that is too shallow stops partway along your thigh, so you feel perched on the edge. A seat that is too deep presses the front edge into the back of your knees, and you either slide forward and slump or prop yourself up with cushions. Neither is a fault in the sofa. It is a mismatch between the seat and the person sitting on it.

Seat depth is not the same as sofa depth

Overall depth is the full front to back measurement, including the arms, frame and back. It decides whether the sofa fits your room. Seat depth decides how the sofa feels once you sit down. Mixing the two up is the most common sizing mistake we see.

Here is how the two compare on our Kingsford Chesterfields.

Measurement Centimetres Inches
Seat depth 58.4 23
Overall depth 94 37
Taken up by back, arms and frame 35.6 14
Seat height from floor 45.7 18

Of the floor space the sofa occupies, about 62 percent is seat. A deep lounge sofa with a 70cm seat in a 100cm body turns 70 percent of its footprint into seat. A Chesterfield spends more of its footprint on structure, because the deep buttoned back and rolled arms are the whole point of the design. For room planning, always use the overall depth. For comfort, use the seat depth.

How deep should a sofa be?

We group seat depth into four bands. Use them as a starting point, then adjust for your height and how you sit.

Band Centimetres Inches Suits
Shallow 50 to 55 20 to 22 Shorter adults, reading, working on a laptop, anyone who wants to stand up easily
Standard 55 to 62 22 to 24 Most households, mixed use, guests and family
Deep 62 to 70 24 to 28 Taller adults, TV watching, sitting with legs tucked up
Very deep Over 70 Over 28 Napping and sprawling, large rooms

Very deep seats are comfortable for lounging, but they take your lower back away from the backrest unless you add cushions, and they use a lot of floor space.

Where a Chesterfield sits in those bands

Every sofa in our Kingsford range, including the Natural Tan and the Dark Brown, has a 58.4cm seat and a seat height of 45.7cm. That puts it in the middle of the standard band. It suits upright sitting, conversation, reading and watching television, with enough room to settle back.

There is a detail the spec sheet cannot show. A seat depth figure is measured on an unloaded cushion. On a sofa with soft loose back cushions, you sink into them, and the usable depth can feel shorter than the number on the page. A fixed tufted back does not give way like that, so the figure you read is closer to the seat you actually get. That is reasoning from how the sofa is built, so treat the number as a guide and try the home test below.

The seat depth also stays the same across the whole range. Only the width changes. Once you know 58cm suits you, you can choose the size purely by wall length: the single seater is 94cm wide, the 2 seater 180cm, the 3 seater 221cm and the 4 seater 242cm. The full range sits in our Chesterfield sofa collection.

A seat height of 45.7cm is a little higher than many modern low profile sofas. That makes it easier to stand up from, which matters if you have stiff knees or hips. It also lines up neatly with a footstool. Our dark brown Chesterfield ottoman is about 46cm high, so it sits level with the seat.

A home test using the sofa you already own

Measure the seat depth of a sofa you find comfortable, from the front edge of the cushion to the backrest. Then compare it with our 58.4cm.

Your current seat depth How a 58cm Chesterfield will feel What to do
Under 53cm Noticeably deeper A small lumbar cushion helps if your back does not reach the backrest
53 to 58cm Very familiar Nothing needed
58 to 63cm Slightly more upright Fine for most people, and easy to get up from
Over 63cm Clearly more upright Add an ottoman to stretch your legs, or sit angled into the arm

Three checks when you sit

Sit right back so your lower back touches the backrest. Your feet should reach the floor without your knees being pushed upward, and you should be able to slide two fingers between the seat edge and the back of your knee. Then stand up without rocking or pushing hard on the arms. If all three feel natural, the depth suits you. If you slide forward, or the edge presses into your knees, the seat is too deep for your leg length.

What to do if the seat is too deep or too shallow

A seat that is slightly too deep is easy to fix with a firm lumbar cushion behind the lower back. Sitting sideways in the corner of a 2 seater, with one leg up, also works well and is how many people use a Chesterfield. A seat that is slightly too shallow usually suits upright sitters, who find they get used to it within a few days.

Some mismatches are not worth fixing. If you are very tall and love sprawling flat, a 58cm seat will feel upright for you, and a deeper lounge sofa is the better choice. We would rather tell you that than sell you the wrong sofa.

Why you can rely on these figures

The measurements in this guide come from the specification tables on our own product pages for the Natural Tan and Dark Brown Chesterfields, which share the same frame. Each sofa is built on a solid hardwood frame, upholstered in top grain buffalo leather, filled with high density foam cushions that reverse for even wear, and compliant with UK fire regulations for upholstered furniture. Every Kingsford sofa carries a 5 year guarantee, and you can read the terms on our warranty page.

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard sofa seat depth?
Most sofas have a seat depth between 55 and 62cm (22 to 24 inches). Our Chesterfields measure 58.4cm (23 inches), which sits in the middle of that range.

What is the difference between seat depth and overall sofa depth?
Seat depth measures only the cushion you sit on, from its front edge to the backrest. Overall depth measures the whole sofa, including arms, frame and back. Use overall depth to check the sofa fits your room and seat depth to judge comfort.

Is a deeper sofa seat more comfortable?
It depends on how you sit. Deeper seats suit taller people and lounging. Shallower seats give more support for upright sitting and are easier to stand up from. A standard depth of 55 to 62cm suits most mixed households.

How do I know if a sofa seat is too deep for me?
The seat is too deep if your feet do not rest comfortably on the floor, the front edge presses into the back of your knees, or you have to slide forward to be comfortable. A lumbar cushion can fix a small mismatch.

What seat depth is best for a small living room?
Choose by overall depth for the room and by seat depth for comfort. A standard seat depth with a compact overall depth works well in smaller rooms. Our 2 seater is 180cm wide and 94cm deep overall.

Is seat depth different on a leather sofa?
The measurement is taken the same way, but a fixed tufted back compresses less than loose back cushions. That means the stated seat depth on a Chesterfield is closer to what you feel when you sit.
