Warmth and comfort – fabric feels inviting from the moment you sit down, which matters in a climate where central heating and cosy evenings in are part of daily life.

The main watch-out with fabric is spill management, marks that aren't dealt with quickly can set in, particularly on looser weaves or pale colours. A fabric with "total variation" (subtle tonal flecks rather than one flat colour) hides everyday marks noticeably better than a solid shade.
