The Survey Says: Durability Doesn't Always Go the Way You'd Expect
One of the most detailed pieces of research on this topic comes from a large-scale UK owner survey of over 1,300 people who had bought a sofa within the previous ten years. The results challenge a few common assumptions.
Wool and wool-blend fabrics came out as the most durable materials overall, with fewer than a quarter of owners reporting any visible damage or wear, an impressive result given some of those sofas were a decade old. Velvet, cotton blends, and synthetic weaves also performed strongly.
Leather, on the other hand, didn't fare as well as many shoppers expect. Genuine leather and faux leather sofas both scored below the average for durability, with faux leather in particular showing the highest rate of visible damage of any material tested. That's a useful reality check: leather has a reputation for toughness, but not all leather (and definitely not all "leather-look" material) lives up to it.
The takeaway for UK buyers: the material name on the spec sheet matters less than the grade and construction behind it. A tightly woven, high-rub-count fabric can easily outlast a low-grade bonded or PU leather.
